UK SMALL BUSINESSES WITHOUT A WEBSITE MISS OUT ON £235 BILLION IN TURNOVER

27 July 2009
  • Research shows 52% of small businesses still do not have a website
  • Small businesses without a website lose an average £52k a year in potential turnover each

Over half of small businesses in the UK do not have a website despite research revealing an average 37% increase in turnover among small businesses with an online presence*. The findings, released today by Mr Site, the website creation package and PayPal, the leading online payments service, show that small businesses without a website could be collectively reducing their turnover by as much as £235 billion**.

Despite consumers embracing the digital age, and the Government’s pledge to transform the UK into one of the leading digital world economies by 2012***, the study indicated that a large proportion of small businesses are still not cashing in on the potential of the internet. 61 per cent of small businesses selling goods and 46 per cent of service-providing small businesses reported they are yet to take the plunge and get online.

Among businesses that have an internet presence, over half (56 per cent) stated their overall turnover had increased since the introduction of a website. The average reported increase in turnover for small businesses since having an online presence is 37%. This means that small businesses without a website could potentially be missing out on additional turnover of as much as £52,000 each****.

The study suggests that a fear of the potential set up costs is the main reason so many small businesses are holding back from getting a website. Almost a quarter (24 per cent) of small businesses surveyed estimated they would need to spend at least £500 or more to get started up online. An additional 25 per cent admitted to having no idea how much cost is involved in website development, whilst 21 per cent thought setting up a website with e-commerce facilities would cost an extra £250.

Cameron McLean, PayPal’s General Manager for UK merchant services comments: “We know that consumers are looking to the internet more and more in the current climate, to search out bargains and fully research which businesses they are going to use. Online sales are bucking the high-street street trend and businesses should establish their online presence before they are left behind. Not having a website is like leaving your shop-front boarded up or refusing to tell customers anything about the services you provide. Creating an impressive ‘virtual shop’ is the way to stay ahead of the game and having a website can be more cost-effective for your business than a high street presence - and is a key launch pad to business success.”

As a global leader in online payments, across 190 countries, PayPal allows businesses to accept payments from all major debit and credit cards and via online bank transfers. With PayPal a merchant can begin trading within minutes an email address and a bank account. Accepted on over 165,000 websites across Europe, PayPal now has over 22 million accounts in the UK and over 184 million accounts worldwide.
